This Presley girl can sing 15 March 2004 LISA Marie Presley made her Australian concert debut at Saturday night's Fashion Rocks at Crown. The daughter of the King closed the event with three songs from her debut album To Whom It May Concern. With mother Priscilla watching from the audience, Lisa Marie finally answered what we were all wondering. Yes, she can sing. And no, she doesn't sound like her dad. Dressed like a rock chick in black leather pants, sequinned over-skirt, baggy black T-shirt, black choker and sneakers, Presley stayed mainly behind her microphone stand and only occasionally moved around the stage. She hardly spoke between songs and seemed almost shy in front of the audience. It would have been a tough crowd, though. The mix of live concert and fashion parade made for a diverse and entertaining show, but meant the audience pretty much stayed in their seats. Presley closed the show with her six-piece band, after performances from Resin Dogs, Katie Underwood, Candice Alley and other Australian acts. While they performed, models strutted the catwalk in the latest fashions from a host of designers including Nicola Finetti, AG, Roy, Ty & Melita and Wayne Cooper. Presley's performance was a sneak preview of her solo show at Crown on Sunday. Priscilla in crowd PRISCILLA Presley managed to sneak into the Fashion Rocks crowd to watch her daughter perform. But as with Friday night's Fashion Rocks dinner at Flemington, she didn't want to be photographed and steal Lisa Marie's thunder. Partying on THE Fashion Rocks after-party at Heat nightclub went on into the wee hours. Lisa Marie Presley mixed with guests until after 3am. |

Presley plays her own tune By Cameron Adams, music reporter, March 10, 2004 SHE may be the first Presley to perform in Australia, but Lisa Marie Presley warned Elvis fanatics are not going to see the return of the King at her Melbourne concerts. "If people are expecting me to be like my dad they're going to be disappointed," Presley said. "I'm nothing like him. I'm in a completely different category. "On my US tour maybe three out of 30 shows there was an Elvis impersonator in the crowd but that's it. "I usually get younger fans, and those that come that are of an older generation end up walking out because it's too loud." Presley, who released her debut album To Whom It May Concern last year, admits she is more comfortable with her fame now she has something to promote, not just her surname. "I know there's people out there who actually appreciate my record for its own various reasons as opposed to other reasons," Presley said. "That's what keeps me going. That's the only reason I do it." The singer says she gets her heavy security (a result of the famous surname) to orchestrate meetings with her fans. "That's why I continue, I make sure I hear that feedback (from fans). I don't do this to be in front of everybody and have my picture taken. I make sure there's a connection with people who have been moved by the record," she said. The singer, 35, admits she still gets nervous addressing the media and their questions. Those questions of course relate to her father and her two ex-husbands: Nicolas Cage and Michael Jackson. "I can see when people are about to segue into the questions," Presley laughed. "Everyone's got their cute little strategic way to ask them -- which I don't usually find very cute -- and they think I'm not expecting them. "Of course, I understand the interest, but I'm not the kind of person who'd want to make a career capitalising on something like that." Presley did, however, discuss her infamous video with Michael Jackson. She appeared naked with her then-husband in the unusual You Are Not Alone clip. "Ah, yeah. What do I think of that video? I think I looked very tanned. I don't know why I did that video. "It actually reminds me of a really bad time in my life. The whole world got to see my a--. "It was just ridiculous. It summed up that period pretty good, that I was out of my mind, I guess!" Presley's single, Lights Out, may have been a Top 40 hit, but she's happy not to register on the charts. "I'm just not interested in selling out to get on the charts and make people happy." Presley has started work on a second album, with a new single due in July. In between music she is in charge of handling her father's image ("it's a constant struggle to keep the name, image and likeness in order") and was planning to see Melbourne with her mother, Priscilla. Lisa Marie Presley performs three songs to close Fashion Rocks this Saturday at Crown and performs a full concert at Crown Palladium on March 21. |

Lisa Marie follows in dad's footsteps By Renee Barnes, March 9, 2004 Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of the world's most famous singer, yearned to be a performer from the age of three. But unlike most young wanna-be popstars she wanted her career later rather than sooner. In Melbourne for the start of her first Australian tour, the daughter of "The King" said the release of her first album at the ripe old age of 35 was deliberate. "I needed to take the time that I needed to take to get it right and develop as a singer songwriter," she told reporters. "I didn't really have the luxury of doing that trial and error in front of everybody before the record came out, so that took a while." Presley, who was nine when Elvis died in 1977, has lived her life in the burning spotlight of media speculation. As the only child of Elvis, through her role of as chairman of the board of Elvis Presley Enterprises and through her high-profile romantic involvements, including Michael Jackson and Nicholas Cage, her life has been held up to public scrutiny since day one. But she feels she is finally making some headway in creating her own identity. "It's been a mountain, but I think I got through that to some degree, I suppose by doing it, by making my own fans," she said. "That's a battle I'm constantly battling. It's like I'm trying to have my own identity, which I may or may not ever fully get, but I know to some degree I have." With two children of her own, Presley admits she took them into account before embarking on a singing career. "I wanted to make sure that they were of age to understand what was happening and I didn't want to be gone when they were little." Presley's album To Whom it May Concern reached number five in the Billboard US chart and has won praise from US critics. She said writing the record was "cathartic and therapeutic" and helped her deal with issues from the past 15 years of her life. However, none of the songs deal with her much-publicised marriage to Michael Jackson. "None of the songs on record are about Michael at all," she said. "They are actually not about one relationship either. They are usually a lot of different angles and a lot of different things." But fans can expect an echo of her father's famous tones. "I don't try, but there's a genetic situation. I occasionally see mannerisms or vocal tones that are deep, deeper than your average female," she told reporters. During her seven-day tour, which has seen two of the six shows sold out, Presley hopes to experience as much of Australia as possible. "I'd like to see as much as I can," she said. "I've only heard great things. Everybody who comes here wants to move here." Presley will start work on her second album when she finishes her Australian tour and won't rule out covering any of Elvis' songs in the future. "Not yet, it hasn't really come up yet as appropriate," she said. "If it did then I would." |

Lisa Marie has mother's worry
by NUI TE KOHA, 08 Mar. 04 LISA Marie Presley is in the building. But her mind is somewhere else. Presley's thoughts are with her daughter, Danielle, aka budding supermodel Riley Keough, 14, who is on assignment in Europe. "My daughter is in another part of the world and it is making me a nervous wreck," Presley said. "We are very close. "The one thing she got from her father is a good bull---- detector. She can spot somebody and have them clocked in 30 seconds. "Still, that will never stop me worrying about my baby." Riley, the hit of Dolce & Gabbana's recent spring parade, is being chaperoned by her father, Danny Keough. Presley is in Melbourne on a national tour. In a candid interview with the Herald Sun, she revealed a childhood evil streak. She deliberately ran over animals that roamed Graceland, the famed estate of her father, Elvis Presley. She also took cash and cameras from tourists. "They would give me money to take photos of my dad when he was asleep," she said. "I would take pictures of the carpet or throw the cameras away. I would never do anything to hurt my father." Presley released her first album, To Whom It May Concern, last year to universal praise. "I wanted to come through with my own voice and, hopefully, have it affect people," she said. "I want people to know that I'm not an Elvis impersonator," she laughed. Presley performs at Crown casino on March 13 and 21. |

Hello! magazine (26 FEBRUARY 2004) The spirit of Memphis came to Milan on Wednesday, when the King's granddaughter made her catwalk debut. Riley Keough, whose grandfather was Elvis Presley, was the first model to sashay down the runway at Dolce & Gabbana's show. "When we met Riley we were immediately struck by her beauty and fresh pure spirit," said the designers afterwards. "It is a thrill for us to help launch her modelling career. With her mother's beauty and her grandfather's attitude she's sure to be a star." The 14-year-old, who is the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and musician Danny Keough, has recently signed to the same modelling agency that handles Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss. And she will no doubt benefit from her mother's extensive experience with the world of showbiz. "She has big plans, she is making me a nervous wreck," joked Lisa Marie. "But she is grounded - she has a really good head on those shoulders - She wants to make her own money, which I completely respect and want her to do, but she is still my baby." |

Elvis Granddaughter, 14, Shakes Up Milan Catwalk MILAN, Italy (Reuters) - When Elvis Presley sang about a "long-legged girl with a short dress on," he probably wasn't thinking that his granddaughter would one day fit the bill. But Wednesday, Riley Keough zipped into a tiny denim miniskirt and strutted around D&G's catwalk on her modeling debut. "I was really nervous before, I was shaking," the 14-year-old said shyly after the show. "But it was fun. I'm looking forward to the next one." Asked if performing was in her blood, Keough simply smiled at the floor, her 5-foot-5-inch frame looking tiny as a couple of towering 6-foot-6-inch models strode past. Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, whose jeans sometimes sport as many rhinestones as one of Elvis's jumpsuits, met Keough at a fashion awards ceremony where her mother, Lisa Marie Presley, presented them with a prize. "We were immediately struck by her beauty and fresh, pure spirit...With her mother's beauty and her grandfather's attitude she is sure to be a star," the designers said. Keough will be back on the catwalk Saturday for the top line Dolce & Gabbana show but in the meantime doesn't plan to shake, rattle and roll with Milan's fashion posse. Instead she is keeping firmly out of the public eye and doing what any smart teen-ager does in Milan - shopping with Dad - Lisa Marie Presley's first husband musician Danny Keough - and his credit card. |

Marriage can wait: Presley
by NUI TE KOHA, 15feb04 LISA Marie Presley would consider walking down the aisle again - despite marriages to Nicolas Cage and Michael Jackson that spectacularly failed. "When I want to have children, I will get married," Presley said. "I don't want to get married for the sake of getting married. "But, then again, I could change my mind if I meet the right person. I just need a break from that subject for a while." In an exclusive interview with the Sunday Herald Sun ahead of her Melbourne tour next month, Presley reveals she was charmed into marrying Jackson. She is also coy about her scathing song, Gone,, which commentators say is an iron-fisted backhander at Cage. "A spineless ending," Presley sings on the track. "Well, who would have guessed dear Daddy/Turned out to be a coward/When I turned my back, you cut my throat." Her 108-day marriage to Cage, nicknamed "Daddy" by his entourage, ended after a fight. Cage threatened to file for divorce - and did. "We are both pirates," Presley said. "Pirates cannot marry each other. Otherwise, they sink the ship. "Two people who have the same nature sometimes need each other to counteract that. Instead, we contributed to it, and then blew it way out of control." Gone came from the turmoil of a break-up. "I do get a kick out of what people are saying about that song," Presley said. "If people want to think that, whatever. I am not confirming or denying anything." Presley said she fell "totally in love" with Jackson. Their 1994 marriage lasted 20 months. Jackson, she said, had the power to intrigue, capture and engage. Critics say Jackson married Presley to counter bad publicity. In 1994, he was charged with child sex offences. But Presley said her motives for marrying Jackson were real. "He is very smart and he knows what he is doing," she said. "He didn't get to where he is today by not being shrewd with people. "At the time, I was quite young. So, I'm not going to disclaim the fact that it was a growing thing for me. "I was naive. I'd never been subjected to anything like it, but I learned fast." Even today, Presley refuses to criticise Jackson directly. "Honestly, it was such a long time ago," she said. "It was a big learning process for me." For stability, Presley, 36, counts on her soulmate Danny Keough, and their children, Danielle, 14, and Benjamin, 11. Presley married Keough, a musician, when she was 20. Their marriage lasted five years. Danielle Keough recently signed to IMG, a model agency powerhouse that has Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss on its books. In April, she will feature alongside supermodels Moss and Amber Valetta in a global campaign for luxury jeweller David Yurman. Presley, a former wild teen with a drug habit, is anxious. "Danielle wants to make her own money, which I completely respect, and want her to do," she said. "But she is still my baby. She is still 14. She has big plans and it is making me a nervous wreck. "I don't want her to fall into anything shallow and aimless. But she is grounded. She has a really good head on those shoulders." Presley will perform at Crown Casino on March 13 and 21 to support her new album, To Whom It May Concern. She admits facing a lifelong battle to step from the shadows of her father, Elvis Presley. "I'm finally okay with getting attention, wearing that hat as a singer and being at the front of the stage," she said. "It is not something I wanted in my life and I've had to break through that fear." |

February 11, 2004 -- 'ONE HUNDRED thousand lemmings can't be wrong," goes the anonymous graffito.
'IN THE world of celebrity at least, 50 is the new 40 - or even the new 35. And 50th birthday celebrations among the rich and famous are ever more fabulous. Recently we had Oprah Winfrey show us what the half-century can be if you have a billion dollars. Now comes word of the adorable John Travolta's 50th bash over last weekend, a surprise party (really) that assembled 300 of John and wife Kelly Preston's most intimate friends. John was lured to Sol Kerzner's One&Only Palmilla Resort in Los Cabos, Mexico, for what he was told would be "a relaxing weekend with a few pals." John, Kelly and close pals Dan Aykroyd and his wife, Donna Dixon, arrived in Los Cabos in a rented vintage Constellation plane. But what waited for him upon arrival was more than "a few pals." Along with 60 relatives who flew from all over the U.S., the movie star with nine lives was greeted by Barbra Streisand and James Brolin, Lisa Marie Presley, Tom Cruise, Oprah, Sly Stallone, Jennifer Flavin, Carly Simon and son Ben Taylor, Robin Wright and Sean Penn, Robin and Marsha Williams, Laura Dern, Ben Harper, Meg Ryan, Scarlett Johansson (John's co-star in "Be Cool"), Jenna Elfman, Kirstie Alley, Balthazar Getty, Gayle King and Buzz Aldrin, to name a few. That night, there was a Mexican fiesta at the resort's Palmilla's Agua Restaurant. Natalie Cole and Jose Feliciano performed. Saturday, it was just star-gazing all over the place - Oprah at the spa . . . Stallone and Mike Medavoy golfing . . . Meg Ryan and Laura Dern sunbathed. That night everybody gathered at Charlie Trotter's restaurant, C, dined on lobster and tuna and were treated to another series of great performances by Tony Bennett, Roberta Flack, Patti Austin, Carly Simon and Ben Taylor, Natalie Cole, and others. Tom Cruise presented Travolta with his birthday cake (alas, he did not pop out of it) and Streisand sang 'Happy Birthday" in what is now the traditional way - a la Marilyn Monroe to JFK. What? You were expecting a cupcake, a candle and a Hallmark card? Happy birthday, John. Believe me when I say, this is just the beginning. |

Elvis' girl pencils in Perth concert
By Simon Collins THE daughter of rock 'n' roll icon Elvis Presley is tipped to visit Perth. Lisa Marie Presley is likely to perform at the Burswood Theatre in mid-March, but the tour is yet to be confirmed. The 35-year-old daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley unveiled her debut album, To Whom It May Concern, last year. The collection of confessional country rock songs traced Presley's tumultuous life and times. She wrote one song with first husband Danny Keough, while another track berated third husband Nicolas Cage, to whom she was married for three months in 2002. The king of rock's only child also had a bizarre 20-month marriage to the king of pop, Michael Jackson, between 1994 and 1996. Their union was denied at first, but confirmed in headline-grabbing fashion when the pair kissed at the 1994 MTV Music Awards. Presley lived at Graceland for the first four years of her life, before her parents separated in 1972 and she moved to Los Angeles with her mother. In 1977, when she was nine, Elvis died from an apparent drug overdose. As a troubled teen she dabbled with drugs, until discovering Scientology at age 18. She began writing songs about that time, but the long shadow of her legendary father prevented her pursuing a career in music until recently. Critics were surprised Presley would expose herself to more public scrutiny with the forthright and honest nature of the songs on To Whom It May Concern. After all, as Elvis' daughter and administrator of his estate, she is rumoured to be worth nearly $650 million. She is president of Elvis Presley Enterprises, the organisation that handles the Presley estate's business dealings, and the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation. |
