Lisa Marie airs her dirty laundry
Now that Lisa Marie Presley has opened up about sex, her 1994 marriage
to Michael Jackson is even more perplexing.
The King's singing scion says in the new Playboy that she likes things
rough, "the way they do it in porn movies."
What's more, the 35-year-old - whose debut CD, "To Whom It May Concern,"
has been on Billboard's Top 25 chart for five weeks - adds: "I think I'd
be much better as a lesbian."
Of her 20-month marriage to Jackson, she says: "He's not sexually
seductive, but there is something riveting about him. He doesn't let
people see who he is. When he [did] ... I got caught up and thought I
was in love with the man."
Presley says she never saw a child in bed with him.
Of her 107-day marriage to Nicolas Cage, Presley says she "hated" him
after "he had a temper tantrum [and] walked out the door. ... It was
just a rampage."
Presley confirms that Cage took her 6-carat yellow diamond ring "and
threw it into the water. ... Nic replaced it two days later with a
10-carat yellow diamond." And even though they're in the middle of a
divorce, she adds, they still have friendly chats on the phone.
Presley expresses her love for her father, who took her on the road and
let her stay up until 5 in the morning.
Her sailor mouth and ambient anger may have started there. "Anything my
father did for me or gave me was done out of love. ... I'm sure I had
moments when I was a snot. But my mom [Priscilla] was there to smack me
back to the other side."

Presley, Aguilera shine at Wango Tango event By Bill Hetherman , Staff Writer
Lisa Marie Presley was about to sing "S.O.B.' on Saturday night at the
Rose Bowl when equipment glitches in her band forced her to pause.
"Technical problems,' the daughter of the rock music icon explained.
The delay might have brought boos from the audience at the 6th KIIS-FM
102.7 Wango Tango concert had it been just about any other artist on
Saturday's bill.
However, the moment showed the power of a famous face. Seeing Presley on
three giant screens for several more seconds only brought more cheers
from an audience made up mostly of fans born long after Elvis Presley
died in 1977.
Presley did not disappoint. She and Christina Aguilera gave performances
that kept this year's so-called "Ultimate Reality Show' from consummate
banality.
The event, about nine hours long, was filled with guest appearances from
familiar reality television figures, including Darva Conger of "Who
Wants to Marry a Millionaire?' and Richard Hatch of "Survivor.'
The marathon closed with survivors of another sort, the rock band KISS.
They took the stage about 20 minutes late to the sounds of fireworks and
a few boos from restless fans ready to call it a night.
But the audience was primed for Presley and Aguilera. Presley is not yet
much of a stage presence, but singing does seem to run through her
blood, as KIIS-FM morning man Rick Dees said during her introduction.
Just as Presley tantalized the crowd with "Lights Out,' Aguilera who
loosens up with the crowd as well as any performer can belted out a
stirring rendition of "Fighter.' Aguilera, now a brunette, began
"Beautiful' by saying it was meant for "everyone who has been
discriminated against.'
Among the male performers, Craig David played an impressive if
predictable set of songs, including "Fill Me In' and "Seven Days.'
However, David's duet with Sting on "Rise and Fall' was over so fast the
latter's appearance seemed almost contrived.
Contrived would be too good an adjective for Jennifer Love Hewitt, who
is lucky she has a second job. As a singer, her voice is barely better
than that of Kelly Osbourne, who was on last year's Wango Tango bill.
Hewitt's performance of "Can I Go Now' was probably the same question
fans were asking themselves as they listened to her.
One of the great pleasures of Saturday's concert was seeing a more
mature and capable Michelle Branch than the artist who looked frightened
while singing at the 2001 Jingle Ball concert at the Staples Center.
After joining Santana on stage for "The Game of Love,' the
bandanna-wearing Branch who said she sat in the back row as a spectator
during the Wango Tango concert two years ago seemed confident in a set
that featured the popular "All You Wanted.'
Similarly, confidence abounds in Amanda Perez, who sang "Angel' with a
gritty spunk long before many fans arrived.
Dressed like the street girl she proudly proclaims herself to be, Perez
pranced off the stage at the end of her gig by promising, "I'm going
straight to the top, baby.'
Hopefully, the "top' includes an encore Wango Tango performance in 2004.

Lisa Marie Presley: Not Daddy's Little Girl Billy Corgan knows she's got something. The princess of rock 'n' roll opens up on her new album. by Maria Chambers, Jennifer Demme and C. Bottomley
They said that it couldn't be done, but they don't know Lisa Marie
Presley that well. For years, the King of Rock 'n' Roll's only daughter
spent more time making copy for the tabloids than tapping into her
family's musical heritage. It's an easy trap to fall into when your last name is Presley, but Lisa Marie possessed a special flair for courting disaster.
Presley first leapt into the limelight in 1994 by marrying Michael "King
of Pop" Jackson. Many dismissed the union as a ploy to divert attention
away from the superstar's child abuse charges and towards Lisa Marie's
nascent singing career. It didn't work. The sloppy kiss seen around the
world on the MTV VMAs couldn't deter those pesky "irreconcilable
differences." In 2002, Presley was back in the spotlight with another
short-term marriage, this time to Elvis buff Nicholas Cage. It lasted
four months. Still no music.
Finally, along comes To Whom It May Concern, a disc that impresses just
about everyone who hears it. First off, Presley can sing. Secondly, with
the help of collaborators Danny Keough (her first ex-husband!) and Billy
Corgan, she's not afraid of tackling her messy past head on - that's a
rock 'n' roll attitude you got to respect. Because she injects a steely
grit into tunes that another singer might overly gloss, a Lisa Marie
song can grab you just as immediately as any National Enquirer headline.
Nowhere is she more direct than on the first single "Lights Out," a
smoky rocker that finds Presley considering the empty burial plot next
to dad's Graceland tomb. Sure, there's an element of celebrity tell-all,
but even Hank Williams would appreciate the song's whiff of mortality.
There's more, too. "Nobody Noticed It" slams the hangers-on and handlers
who won't let her father lie, "Disciple" does much the same for Wacko
Jacko's entourage, and the ballad "Gone" may or may not be raking Cage
over the coals.
Lisa Marie has persevered by biding her time and only making an album
when she knew she had to. And people are listening. To Whom It May
Concern debuted in the Billboard top five. The new star talked to VH1
about barroom brawls, Scientology, avoiding tequila and how nobody tells
daddy's girl what to do.
VH1: I read that you were in a bar-room brawl. What happened there?
Lisa Marie Presley: I have a friend who likes to throw drinks on a
particular person at parties. That night we were at this party held by
this other friend of mine, and she came up to me and said, "I just threw
a drink on her!" I said, "Nah! I don't believe you. Here she comes." Her
back was towards us, so my friend grabbed another drink and it ended up
on the back of her miniskirt and her back. I didn't realize she was
going to do it! Then my friend jumps out of the way and leaves me
standing there. The victim turned around and when she saw me standing
there, she thought I did it. Mind you, she was out of her mind, so I
don't know how she could have seen anybody doing anything. Then the next
thing I know, she made sure that story got out [to the papers]. That was
bad, because I can't even take credit for it! Not that I hadn't thought
about it or I wasn't getting a kick out of it, but I didn't do it. When
she gave it in the press - I wished I had done it!
VH1: Do people sit there and wait for you to screw up so they can pounce
on you like that?
Presley: Yeah, it's been that way for a long time.
VH1: You're a Scientologist. What exactly is the premise of Scientology?
Presley: It's basically an encyclopedia on life. It's answers. It's not
a belief that's pushed on you. It's about self-discovery. It answers a
lot of questions about human relationships, communication, the mind,
insanity, that black dark cloud that plagues all of us. It explains a
lot of things like that - not in some generic way where you just have to
believe. It's laid out for you and it usually works.
VH1: What draws so many celebrities to Scientology?
Presley: For me, I can tell you that [L. Ron Hubbard] had an
understanding of what an artist was. He had empathy for them. It made my
life easier in understanding things like that. It has nothing to do with
celebrities pushing it. I've never been asked to talk about it, ever.
Nor would I if someone told me to. I've only discussed it when I felt
like it.
VH1: John Travolta, who is also a Scientologist, recently said you're
like a surrogate daughter to him. Do you feel that way?
Presley: Yeah. We kind of went into that [relationship] straight away.
He gets protective. I think after the Michael episode he got very
protective. He was concerned about who I was going to date next! He's a
sweetheart,. He's such a teddybear, that man, I swear to god. So genuine
and so sweet.
VH1: Who do you think you sound like musically?
Presley: I don't think I sound like anybody. I hear what everybody's
saying, that I sound like Cher or Sheryl Crow. But it's the lower
register. I don't think people know what to do with it. Not many female
vocalists have that lower register. I can do high as well, but I’m more
comfortable low. That's my comfort zone.
VH1: Who were your musical role models?
Presley: People like Pat Benatar, Linda Ronstadt, Elton John, Tracy
Chapman, Mazzy Star, Jeff Buckley. It's such a wide variety, it's
schizophrenic.
VH1: How long have you wanted to make an album?
Presley: Record executives were telling me, "Whenever you're ready,
please come to me first." But at that time, I just wasn't ready. Then
everything fell into place. When I signed the record deal four or five
years ago, I was coming out of a whacked-out period, and I needed the
record as a vehicle.
VH1: Why didn't you feel ready at first to make the record?
Presley: I wasn't ready emotionally. I needed time to learn how to
write. I didn't want to come out of the gate on a whim. I knew this was
serious and I had to pour everything into it. It had to get past my
standards.
VH1: You've been very protective of your family. Why did you decide to
be so honest on this album?
Presley: Music has always gotten me through life, particularly honest,
real music. I didn't do anything different than what any other artist
does. Because it's me, there's more attention paid to whether it's
personal. It's like, "Who is she talking about?" I don't get moved by
that. I had been writing [songs] since I was 22. I did this album for
me, to put something out there of substance from me, but also to affect
other people the way music’s affected me.
VH1: Zwan's Billy Corgan helped you in the early stages of the record.
Presley: He's a really good friend of mine. I would bounce ideas off of
him. He pulls no punches, but I admired that. He said to me, "Even
though you're not playing an instrument, you're pulling something from
somewhere. That's really hard to come by. You need to focus on that." A
few years later, I had been working my butt off to record a song called
"Savior." I flew to Chicago and played him some of my songs and he went,
"My God! You've done it. This is good." We did that song, and that was it.
VH1: "Nobody Noticed It" stops me in my tracks. You played that at the
25th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death. I heard it was pretty
mind-blowing.
Presley: I ran the track and a giant screen came down. A friend of mine
made it so that the lyrics came up in very bold letters synchronized
with me singing it. Before, I wasn't going to say that that song was
about him, but then the 25th anniversary came along and I was trying to
figure out what could I do? It hit me - there's nothing more perfect
than me playing that. The crowd reacted quite thunderously.
VH1: It must have been an emotional moment.
Presley: I was a little apprehensive because I didn't want to put the
attention on me, but it felt like the right thing to do that night. That
song is also an ode to someone who passes away who has been important to
you. The words in the chorus could apply to anybody, a family member or
a loved one, who died.
VH1: Why did you write "Lights Out"?
Presley: For the record, "Lights Out" is not about my father. It was
written because producer Glen Ballard wanted me to write a song like
that. I revolted against the idea, but I knew I could I get his
attention if I did it. I wrote it in like 45 minutes; the lyrics just
came out. I thought if I was going to write it, I would come at it from
a weird way. Everybody seems to like it, and the song’s haunted me since
then.
VH1: Would you have preferred not to release "Lights Out"?
Presley: I'm a typical artist who doesn't like to have the single picked
for political reasons. But now, I understand how it works - it is very
political. It's not like I don't like "Lights Out," I just didn't want
it as the first single. Having it out first makes me look like I'm doing
something I'm not trying to do. It seemed like it was going to defeat
the whole purpose of why I was doing a record in the first place.
VH1: Now that the album's out there and has gone gold, do you feel a
sense of accomplishment?
Presley: I'm happy. I did it and I had it tough. I'm up against a lot -
most celebrity kids are. I was ready to be annihilated. I had all the
odds stacked against me on this one, which is why I can’t even come
close to [believing it’s happening]. I feel like people want it to
succeed and people just want to just f*cking annihilate it. I have so
many odds against me that, yeah, I can breathe easier right now!
VH1: Do you have an alcoholic beverage that you no longer drink? And why
not?
Presley: Tequila! Because I get mean. Three weeks ago, at a friend's
birthday party, I tried to have a margarita and I just attacked - I
started yelling at my ex-husband Danny. I don't usually do that when I’m
drinking, so I thought, "This is not good." That’s where you have to
draw the line.
VH1: Do you have any recurring dreams?
Presley: Yes, that I'm choking. It can be anything from a quarter to a
safety pin to a ski-pole. That was the grand finale that I had, in Utah.
The ski-pole took the cake. When I woke up, I had to announce to
everybody that I dreamed I had swallowed a ski-pole!
VH1: What piece of merchandise do you hope never gets made with your
likeness on it?
Presley: Toilet paper. I could say something really crude, but I'll
refrain - tampons!
