Lisa Marie Presley's All Grown Up
May 09 2003
Lisa Marie Presley is setting out on her first tour. From July 11 through August 9, she'll be opening for Chris Isaak as the two journey amphitheatres across the States.
Prior to that, Presley is hitting the radio station show circuit. She has seven shows booked between May 17 and June 20, including a stop for the "Today Show" summer concert series and an appearance for VH1's "Divas Duets."
All this gigging comes, of course, in support of Presley's debut album, To Whom It May Concern. The disc hit the charts at No. 5 with 140,000 copies sold.

Presley concert coming
Lisa Marie books Memphis debut By Michael Lollar (May 9, 2003) The Commercial Appeal.
For the first time in 27 years a member of the Elvis Presley family will
sing live on stage in Memphis when Lisa Marie Presley performs at Memphis Botanic Garden Aug. 1.
Presley will be the opening act for Chris Isaak in the Live at the Garden outdoor concert series on the grounds, making her first Memphis appearance since the debut of her album "To Whom It May Concern."
Presley interrupted her honeymoon in Hawaii last year to appear here at the event called Elvis-The Concert, in which a video of Elvis is accompanied by a live band made up of former Elvis bandmates and backup singers. In that August concert, Lisa Marie simply introduced a recorded version of the song Nobody Noticed It, which became part of her new album.
Botanic garden executive director Marilyn Ligon said Lisa Marie's scheduled 8 p.m. appearance on Aug. 1 is "a major bonus for concertgoers, especially for those who have already purchased season tickets."
Isaak had been booked as the main act for the Aug. 1 concert. Lisa Marie then signed on as opening act during Isaak's tour, which just happened to turn into her Memphis debut. Presley's performance will be only a few blocks from the house at 1034 Audubon Drive which Elvis bought for his family in 1956, after his early success.
Elvis's last Memphis appearance was at the Mid-South Coliseum on July 5, 1976, said Graceland spokesman Todd Morgan.

Lisa Marie Presley to be opening act at Portland concert
Thursday, May 1, 2003, Portland Press Herald Report
The King's little girl is coming to Portland.
Lisa Marie Presley, who released her first album in April, will perform at the Merrill Auditorium on July 13. She'll be the opening act for singer-songwriter Chris Isaak.
Tickets are $40 and $50 and go on sale Saturday at noon. They are available at the Merrill box office, 20 Myrtle St., Monday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.; by calling 842-0800; or online at www.porttix.com.
Presley, 35, will be performing a makeup concert of sorts for her dad. Elvis Presley was scheduled to perform at the brand-new Cumberland County Civic Center in downtown Portland on Aug. 17, 1977. But he died the day before.
Lisa Marie Presley was 9 when her father died. After a turbulent adolescence, she turned to Scientology at age 18 and began writing songs, though she didn't pursue music seriously. She's been married three times, including to music superstar Michael Jackson and movie star Nicolas Cage.
After her divorce from Cage last year, Presley decided to pursue a music career. She released her first album, "To Whom It May Concern," in early April. Fueled by her famous name, the album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard album chart and sold 140,000 copies in its first week of release.
Though critics were skeptical of her musical ability, critic MacKenzie Wilson, writing in "The All Music Guide," called the album "deeply personal, edgy and furious." Since releasing the album, Presley has blitzed the media, appearing on ABC's "Good Morning America," NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," among others.

The King's little girl speaks a little too freely Sunday, May 4, 2003, San Francisco Chronicle
Elvis' daughter took a leisurely 35 years to pick up on the family business. Three failed marriages -- including one to Michael Jackson and another to Nicolas Cage -- and years of emotional upheaval went into Lisa Marie Presley's tough-but-tender first album, "To Whom It May Concern," but the wait paid off. The disc premiered at No. 5 on the Billboard charts, and her single, "Lights Out," has caused the programmers at a certain music video channel to behave like rabid Pekingese.
Q: What is your advice for anyone who wants to be on VH1 24 hours a day?
A: Oh, God. Am I really on there 24 hours a day?
Q: Maybe it's more like 23 hours because sometimes they show those "Girls Gone Wild" commercials.
A: I don't know.
Q: It's good, though, because at first nobody was going to care about your record because of your dynasty and everything.
A: Well, they wouldn't have cared if I was trying to be some pretentious pop star or something. Then it would have been dead out of the gate. But the fact that I made a credible album was a surprise.
Q: Now you're everywhere. Do you worry about getting too popular?
A: I always worry about overexposure, but it's more important for me to have attention for the right reasons right now as opposed to some sensationalist B.S. crap that's just ridiculous. The celebrity thing -- whatever that is -- I don't like so much. With this, I feel like I can hold my head up higher, and I feel much more proud to get the attention.
Q: What were you talking about on Howard Stern about shaving all your parts?
A: Come on, was I really saying anything that different from what most women on the planet do every day?
Q: Didn't you say it on the radio?
A: I don't know. It seems to go different with me. Like, right now, I don't know if you know, but I'm on the cover of the Star because I'm a lesbian.
Q: Nobody told me you were a lesbian.
A: I'm actually not. But I did say on Howard Stern that I had that experience when I was 17. Of course, tabloids haven't given a flying crap about me this entire time, but that they wanted to jump on. I didn't do anything that different from most people at that point in their lives, but now I'm named and tacked and clocked.
Q: Maybe you just talk too much.
A: See, I've always been like that, except I just never did it in public. The thing that happens with me is, I don't understand the dynamic, but if I say something, then I'm labeled as whatever I said.
Q: What did you think you would be doing for your job if you didn't become a singer?
A: I never not wanted to be a singer. Since I was 3, I knew this was what I wanted to do. Well, I can't say I wanted to do it, but I fantasized and thought about it all the time. I never thought it would actually happen. And then I started writing at 21 kind of as a therapeutic thing just to get me through stuff. It kind of just happened. I never actually imagined I would do it until I signed the deal, and then I knew I was committed to do it.
Q: Did you ever take a career aptitude test in high school?
A: I always failed aptitude tests.
Q: I don't think you can fail that test. It just tells you if you're going to be a dog trainer or saxophonist or what.
A: I think I've failed every test I've ever taken. If there was a failure I would have been it.
Q: I know. Are you ever going to get married again?
A: I'm not saying I wouldn't. It just has to be the right situation. I'm not going to be whimsical about it. If it ever happened again, it would be a really long time before it happened, and I'm sure it wouldn't be some big romantic, I don't know, outburst.
Q: So you still believe in the institution of marriage.
A: I do. But I come from a different situation than most people. I don't want to be looked at as an example. I've been handed a different set of chips, and I've tried to find my way with it. Unfortunately, it's been in front of the public, but it's a genuine search to find the right mate. It's just that I can't quite find the right way to go because of the situation I've been handed. It's been difficult. I've struggled, and it's been obvious, so I don't necessarily want to be looked at as the cheerleader in that department. I probably shouldn't have too much attention in that area.
Q: Oh wait, I forgot to ask you about Michael Jackson, Nicolas Cage, your dad, drugs, Scientology and Macaulay Culkin.
A: Macaulay Culkin? How did he get in there?

The Presley & Travolta Encounter
Lisa Marie Presley and John Travolta are two big stars and two big vocal supporters of the Church of Scientology, but as Access Hollywood's Nancy O'Dell and Shaun Robinson found out, their relationship goes way, way back.
Lisa Marie revealed to Nancy that when she was younger she had a crush on Travolta. For Lisa Marie's 10th birthday, her mom Priscilla took her to meet the heartthrob on the set of Welcome Back Kotter.
When asked about her first encounter with John, Lisa told Nancy: "I was dying. He was sitting in the classroom where they sit in their little thingies. He was just sitting there and he waved at me and I just thought I was going to die of a massive heart attack."
Shaun Robinson got John's side of the story on the set of his new fireman movie Ladder 49. "I remember her visiting with her mom, and I do remember her being a big fan. Of course Lisa is very quiet, so if she was feeling that way it was hidden," said John.
"He was really sweet, he's probably one of the sweetest, most genuine people you could ever meet," Lisa told Nancy.
The first meeting on the set of Kotter also put the Presley women on the path to Scientology. Priscilla came to Travolta for help right after Elvis died.
"I felt special and fortunate that Priscilla came to me to get help," revealed Travolta. "Elvis had just died a month before or something like that and she wanted to know why things were going well for me, and how I could keep my head straight. I said, 'Well, check out Scientology and see.'"
The Presley women and Travolta remain close friends to this day.
