Code Shoulder (New York Daily News - Rush & Molloy)

It may have been a proud moment when President Bush presented a group of Navajo Indians with Congressional Gold Medals yesterday afternoon, but it wasn't quite the photo op the people at MGM had hoped for.

As part of the studio's publicity campaign for an upcoming film, "Windtalkers," MGM had wanted to use footage from the ceremony honoring 29 Navajo "code talkers" - World War II soldiers who created a secret military code based on the Navajo language. The film is based on the code talkers' experiences.

MGM asked to set up cameras in the Capitol Rotunda and also asked that the film's star, Nicolas Cage, be allowed to appear on stage at the event.

"They would have used it as part of a trailer to promote the movie," a House aide told Roll Call, the Capitol Hill gazette.

An MGM spokesman confirmed that House officials shot down the studio's requests, but said the filming would have been for a video news release, not a trailer.

MGM may want to have a chat with the real code talkers. Some don't like the way the film focuses on Cage's character rather than on the Navajo.

"Most movies are like that. … The Anglo cowboy is always the hero," Sam Billison, president of the Navajo Code Talkers Association, told Newsweek. "I guess this is the same thing."

Nic & Lisa Marie Honor 'Windtalkers' (ETonline)

NICOLAS CAGE and his new sweetheart LISA MARIE PRESLEY came out to help honor veteran WWII Navajo Marine code-talkers in Washington D.C. yesterday.

Twenty nine real-life "Windtalkers," some of whom are portrayed in Nick's upcoming war drama of the same name, received The Congressional Medal of Honor from PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH in a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. Four of the five living veterans and the families of others were on hand to receive the distinction.

The new film, directed by action master JOHN WOO and co-starring relative newcomer ADAM BEACH, is the first film ever to tell the story of the Navajo Marine code talkers secret program of World War II. This top-secret, unbreakable code, developed by the Navajos, was instrumental in securing America's victory. The language was considered so valuable in the war effort that each Windtalker was guarded by a Marine with orders to kill him if captured by the enemy.

John Woo and Adam Beach were also on hand to witness the ceremony, and later mingled with veterans and politicians alike in a reception hosted by MGM. "I think it's overdue," Cage told CNN's EILEEN O'CONNOR. "I am glad this is happening, and I am very happy to be part of the ceremony this afternoon. I think it's important to recognize the bravery of the men who were involved, and most people don't know that Navajo Native Americans were actually Marines and fought alongside us."

Fresh off their private jet Wednesday night, Nicolas Cage and girlfriend Lisa Marie Presley supped at the Palm -- with Cage ravenously downing the whole Surf and Turf special for two -- and tipping more than 20 percent. Alas, a fellow diner e-mailed us: "I was seated near these two superstars -- a pleasant surprise in an otherwise slow Washington summer. The greater surprise was the two thug rent-a-cops with them -- who did their best to intimidate anyone who either dared look in their direction or decided to use the restroom, which required a stroll past their table."

Bush for their service.

We hear that before Nicholas Cage and girlfriend Lisa Marie Pressley checked into Washington's Ritz-Carlton Hotel last night, he asked that the room be stocked with 25-year-old Scotch and relatively fresh Power Bars. Thus fortified, Cage will attend today's ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda at which the Congressional Gold Medal will be presented to four of the 29 American Navajo "code talkers" who developed an unbreakable U.S. military code that helped win World War II. Cage stars in "Windtalkers," the MGM movie about them.
